Brisbane City Council continued a long-held Christmas tradition today with the judging of its annual Christmas bus decorating competition.
The event, which is in its thirteenth year, was held atop the newly-completed Coronation Drive Overpass, with buses from each of Council’s eight bus depots competing.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman was on hand to help pick the winning bus, which went to the staff at the Garden City bus depot in Brisbane’s south.
Public and Active Transport Chairman Jane Prentice, who was also on the judging panel, said the annual Christmas bus decorating competition was a popular Brisbane tradition.
“Brisbane City Council buses carried a record 72 million passengers last year so this is a great way to spread the Christmas cheer across the city,” Cr Prentice said.
“I’m really proud to see the extra length that our staff are willing to go to to bring the Christmas spirit to their passengers. This was another outstanding year of entrants.”
Cr Prentice said there was plenty of tinsel and other Christmas decorations, as well as drivers dressed in Santa suits.
Some of the drivers were also heading to the children’s hospital afterwards to deliver toys they had collected as donations, she said.
The competing buses were from the Garden City, Toowong, Virginia, Carina, Willawong, Larapinta, Bowen Hills and Richlands bus depots.
Cr Prentice said residents should keep an eye out for the buses in coming weeks.
“The buses that took part in the competition this morning will continue in service with decorations in tact,” Cr Prentice said.
“We’ll also be making every effort to ensure these buses are used to conduct our tours of Christmas lights around the city, which started last night (Thursday, 17 December).”
