Brisbane City Council is handing out $100,000 worth of grants to environment groups as part of its push to make Brisbane Australia’s most sustainable city.
Council’s Civic Cabinet this week approved the first round of funding from the Brisbane City Council Environmental Grants Program for 2009/10.
Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chair Peter Matic said 36 grants totalling $100,203.68 were awarded across three categories covering wildlife care, waterway and environment management and community gardens.
“There are many dedicated volunteers who help care for this city’s natural environment. This is one way that we’re helping to support their good work,” Cr Matic said.
“These grants are also another way we are working towards making Brisbane Australia’s most sustainable city by 2026.”
Cr Matic said community groups could still apply for the next round of grants, which was expected to open February 2010.
“We still have about $147,000 in the pot for other groups who wish to take advantage of these generous grants,” Cr Matic said.
“Groups can download an application from the Brisbane City Council website.”
The categories are:
1. Wildlife Carers Grants
2. Cultivating Community Gardens
