Bus passengers are being picked up outside Fortitude Valley train station after a breakthrough with the Rail Tram and Bus Union, Public and Active Transport Chairman Jane Prentice said today.
Stops 211 and 212 were closed in September last year to divert buses away from the Valley Fiveways after the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) raised concerns that buses were routinely stuck in the intersection during heavy congestion periods.
Cr Prentice said Council altered the right-turn traffic light sequences at the intersections of Brunswick St at Water St and Herston St.
“We’ve reviewed the situation and after almost a month, we’re very happy with how it’s gone,” she said.
“So this new system, which has significantly freed up the fiveways intersection, will remain well into the future.”
Cr Prentice said feedback from the RTBU had been positive.
“The drivers now feel that they can run these routes without the prospect of getting stuck in the intersection,” she said.
“And passengers now have certainty that these stops will be available to them.”
Cr Prentice said Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Council team were committed to improving bus services for drivers and passengers alike.
“Just in the past fortnight, we’ve introduced our 1000th bus to the fleet and added an extra 436 services a week right across the city,” she said.
The Lord Mayor put a record 337 new buses on the road during his first term and will add an extra 500 rigid equivalents by the end of his second term in 2012.
