Brisbane City Council goes mobile

Written on the 23 July, 2010

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman today launched a brand new service allowing easier access for visitors and residents to visit Council’s website on their mobile phones.

Brisbane City Council’s free www.brisbanecity.mobi is the country’s largest and most comprehensive council-initiated mobile phone service available on all internet enabled ‘smart’ phones.

Cr Newman said the new service ensured Council remained at the forefront of technology while providing greater access to services and information.

“Research tells us that mobile devices are fast becoming the most common way for people to surf the net,” he said.

“I want Brisbane to be a connected and accessible New World City that keeps pace with new communication technology.”

The service is accessed through the website: www.brisbanecity.mobi and distils the most popular Council website information across eight icons, including parks and venues, traffic and transport, events, library services, and waste and bins.

“This service is the new way for people to access Council information about our city - whether they want to know what’s on this weekend or check real-time traffic alerts before they drive home from work,” Cr Newman said.

“People can even check on their phones to see if their local library has the book they want to borrow on the shelf.

“Residents can also use the service to report a problem in the community, such as a broken footpath or Council sign, by sending a fix-o-gram,” he said.

The service also links to the latest information about the City Hall restoration project, including videos of the construction to date.

The website: www.brisbanecity.mobi is optimised for mobile phones; ensuring dynamic information is downloaded quickly in an easy-to-read format.

Research shows that in 2009, more people used mobile phones to access data than to make calls and they are expected to overtake personal computers as the most common method for accessing the web by 2013.

Brisbane City Council has developed the mobile service in-house using software from a local Australian company Blink Mobile Technologies Pty Ltd, who were recently awarded the ATUG (Australian Telecommunications Users Group) ‘Innovation in Telecommunications’ Award for 2010.

To download the free service, visit www.brisbanecity.mobi from your smart phone (any phone with Internet capability). Make sure you bookmark or save the URL to your favourites or your home page. For more information, phone Council on 3403 8888.
